I have always needed relatable characters to keep me interested in a story. Not only does the protagonist need to have some character qualities that I can relate to, but I even love how some authors (Dickens comes to mind) make secondary characters and even villains have some quality that I recognize. Sometimes, it even helps to see how a character deals with a person who has negative qualities.
